The excitement of the season is mounting! No, it’s not golf or real estate sales, even though they are definitely in the running; it’s meteors! I’ve been known to set my clock and awaken at unseemly hours to observe meteor showers. This week, however, starting Tuesday AM at dawn, the Perseid meteor shower should be visible in spite of the waxing moon. From what I have read, the best viewing times are the 9th, 10th, and 11th, since the Perseids’ peak will occur around the 13th, when the moon is full.
I love basic astronomy, meteor showers and the Perseids are no exception. The Perseids are typically fast and bright, with good tails and an occasional amazing fireball. So, get out of bed early the next several mornings and catch a celestial show rivaled by few.
Oh, by the way…I’m lucky enough to live in an area of Steamboat Springs with little ambient light. The summer sky is always in my sights!

As I was reading the newspaper this morning, I thought about how many upcoming golf fund-raising events there are. If you love to golf, you can “golf for a cause” pretty much all summer. The opportunity to play all of the local courses in a fun, competitive atmosphere is an attractive reason to choose a few “golf for a cause” events. The fundraiser for our local Hospice and Respite House is scheduled for June 14 and more teams are always welcome. Follow the link for a Steamboat Pilot article about a couple of other tournaments.
Also, the link below is to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort’s Calendar of Events for the summer. Not only can you “golf for a cause”, but you can “bike for a cause” , or just plain recreate all summer because……

Now that I dare to think of golf soon happening, the blizzards will commence. However, if they don’t, get your sticks out and dusted off. The Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig, Colorado is rumored to soon be opening! Haymaker, one of the two public courses in Steamboat Springs has announced rates for the upcoming 2010 season. The rules have changed slightly, so pay attention.
Resident season passes will remain at $1,025 if purchased before April 30, and will jump to $1250 after that date. Residents are defined as Routt County homeowners who have local driver’s licenses as well as those who are registered to vote here. (an incentive for all of you golfers who don’t vote to register) For non-resident property owners, the pass will set you back $1700 before the April 30 cutoff and $1900 afterwards. Passes are available at the Parks and Rec office next to the Howelsen Hill Ice Arena from April 5-22 and will resume at the Haymaker Pro Shop April 26. Other fees are posted on the Haymaker web site.
Who knows other than Mother Nature when the courses may open, but the local powers that be will open them as soon as possible. And while you are thinking golf, don’t forget about Rollingstone Ranch, Steamboat Golf Club and Catamount Ranch and Club…all fine golf clubs in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Golf season is on it’s way, but don’t get too excited…there is still some fine skiing to do.
